Krill Oil
How it is different from fish oil?
Krill oil is mostly made from shrimp-like krill species that are found in cold waters of the Antarctic and North Pacific Oceans. It contains three main components.
Omega-3 fatty acids similar to those found in conventional fish oil.
Astaxanthin antioxidant protects the body from unstable substances that are believed to cause certain chronic diseases. Unlike other antioxidants which are limited by blood-brain barriers astaxanthin is thought to protect eyes and central nervous system from radical damage. It also reduces the effect of ultraviolet light and UV-induced skin damage.
Among other supplements of krill oil come Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Vitamin D.
What are its advantages?
Unlike fish oil, krill oil does not cause fishy burps, which are a common side effect of fish oil. Krill oil offer considerably higher amount of astaxanthin than fish oil.
Does it have any disadvantages?
Several studies have found toxic residues in Antarctic krill. Similarly to fish oil people with allergies to seafood or bleeding disorders should not use krill oil unless under supervision of health professionals. It might not be compatible with some drugs such as aspirin and other blood thinners.
Side effects of the oil include diarrhea or ingestion too.
What does it do to the body?
A clinical study conducted at the University of Montreal concluded that krill oil can significantly reduce the emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.
Another study shows that Krill Oil is ten times more effective than fish oil as a remedy for high cholesterol. 120 people who were taking krill oil exhibited reduction in bad cholesterol (LDL) by 34% and increase in good cholesterol (HDL) by 43.5%, which is a significant improvement over fish oil capabilities that come to 4.6% and 4.2% respectively.
