Flaxseed Oil
What is it?
Also known as linseed oil, Flaxseed oil is derived from dried ripe seed of flax plan. It is another edible oil offered as a nutritional supplement with the highest level of omega-3 fatty acids among other oils.
(Omega-3) Alpha-linolenic acid is especially beneficial in treating inflammation that could lead to atherosclerosis, heart disease and arrhythmia prevention.
Why take it
Flaxseed oil contains important dietary fatty acids that have several health benefits. These acids help in the production of cell membranes as well as hormone-like compounds which are essential for proper body functioning as they help to regulate blood pressure, heart rate and keep the nervous system in check.
What to consider?
Recent placebo studies revealed that consumption of flaxseed oil may not be responsible for reduction in the risk of stroke or cancer. This is explained by the fact that extracted flaxseed oil does not contain lignans which are considered to have antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties found in seeds of flax plant. However, some brands add lignans during production of their flaxseed oil products.
Flaxseed oil has a shelf life of only a few weeks unless it is constantly kept under cool conditions.
What are the effects?
Flax seeds or flaxseed oil may help to lover cholesterol levels that lead to various heart diseases and stabilize blood pleasure. This has been confirmed by several studies including Boston’s Simmons College one that lasted for 5-years and as a result come to the conclusion that flaxseed oil may be useful in preventing a second heart attack.
The lignans found in flax seeds play important role in reducing the risk of cancer. One study found that patients who added 3 tablespoons of flaxseed daily into their diet exhibited much slower division of tumor cells and a greater rate of their death than others who didn’t follow such diet over a period of 5 weeks while the experiment lasted.
