Fish Oil Reduces Risk of Schizophrenia
Based on observation that confirms fish oil ability to cure depression (see this article) another research on effect of Omega-3 acids on brain functions was conducted at the Oxygen Research Center in Melbourne, Australia. This time a more scientific study reviewed the effect of fish oil on prevention of Schizophrenia in patients subjective to this disease.
The results were highly positive. The method for researching effect of fish oil on this mind altering disease was the same as used in breast cancer treatment research where individuals with the smallest breast lumps were selected for try-out period in prevention of dangerous disease from escalating. Similarly, a group of people who experienced hallucinations or delusions were the main participants in this study.
The study involved 81 at-risk individuals aged between 15 and 25. For 3 months one half of the group received 1.5 grams of a fish oil capsule while the rest of the group were given a placebo. One year later, 28 percent of those getting the placebo developed psychosis. Of those getting fish oil supplements, only about 5 percent demonstrated signs of disease.
Fish oil presents a natural alternative to anti-psychotic drugs which have undesirable side effects.
